Mankind - Basically good or basically evil?
Many people over the years have told me that mankind is basically good and that evil is just an aberration that occurs from time-to-time in everyone and sometimes overwhelms and takes control over some.
I don't put on any pretenses about what I believe and I believe that the Holy Bible is the truth not just a truth. The Bible teaches us that mankind is fallen and is basically evil. I concur.
Let's look at the human race and put this is uncomplicated terms.
If mankind was basically good, why has not the human race improved? Yes, we have incredible, medical, and scientific advances that have made life for many easier. I would not trade living 100 years ago for living today. But why have we not improved? Slavery still exists. We not only can kill each other in mass quantities, but the after effects destroy the land in which we live and those not killed initially die slowly in a manner equivalent and in some ways more grotesque than those tortured to death during the Inquisition. Governments are still corrupt. People act in selfish ways toward one another. Prejudice is as it always was it just has new faces and rests in different countries. Yes some headway has been made but globally, as a race (human), I see not much improvement. US economy is based on selfish desire. Don't blame corporate America for that either. What used to be considered immoral is now considered acceptable. Addictions are wide-spread and in so many different forms. Many of which support those conveniences we now enjoy. If you don't think so, find out from where a huge amount of the finances for the internet come. This is just scratching the surface. And with all of the technology and advances we have, I can only foresee the human race getting worse.
So when people tell me that the Bible is narrow-minded and obsolete and a fairy tale and that people are basically good. I just don't see it. I see that people are basically evil and that once in a while goodness occurs. Goodness is an aberration. The Bible tells us that we are fallen and that we cannot on our own make up for the sins we have committed. It is hard to face this because we like to believe that we are basically good. Who wants to be told the opposite? I didn't and I still don't. Unfortunately, my feelings don't and won't change the condition of my soul. What can? I think you know, but at the risk of making many cringe or roll their eyes, or get angry with me, I will tell you. The debt for the sins of all was paid by God, the judge Himself when He took on the form of a man, and died sinless on the cross. That sacrifice is indeed the only free thing that exists in a selfish world where nothing else is free. You can either accept it or reject it. Acceptance of it and only it can you change you from being basically evil.
You can tell me that you are glad that I found my peace but actually He found me. I hope He finds you.
