I Am Yours And You Are Mine

In the book of  "Jeremiah" in the Holy Bible, God mentions 5 times that Israel will be His People and He will be their God.

One of the more popular worship songs by Hillsong is Oceans.  There is a line in it that states "I am yours and you are mine" in reference to a relationship with God.  I could spend a lot of time listing the multitude of songs with similar lines in it.

I have been a Christian for over 26 years and I have come to a strong understanding of being His.  I understand surrender and yielding to God and more importantly how much and how often I need to do so. The book of James talks about being a bond servant/ slave to God and what that entails. Again, belonging to Him.  I love hymns and a favorite is I Surrender All.

So, I think I have a good foundation of Christ giving all to me and so I belong to Him.  No problem.  My life is so much better because of it.  But here is what hit me between the eyes.  The other part.  The part that I have yet to see emphasized in song and or sermon.  "YOU ARE MINE."  This is the thing I did not see.  As much as we choose to surrender all who we are to Him, He chooses to give all of himself that He can to be part of us.  A resounding duh?  Maybe. But think about it.  We recognize who we are, what we are, and are willing to surrender all of ourselves to our creator, who has promised to fix us.  But have you claimed Him?  Not the name it, claim it, and eventually blame it tripe that Mr. Osteen and others have shoveled out for years.  I mean understanding that the creator of the universe is yours.  Not to control.  But to love.  He desires to be yours! Does that blow your mind?  It did/does mine.   He is mine.  He is yours too but the selfish me focuses on He is mine.

But what does that mean?  Well to me, it means that a Holy, perfect, omniscient, omnipotent, universe creating God wants, no deeply desires, that I love Him back.  He craves my love.  Not in a warped co-dependant, you name the psycho-babble jibberish, way.  But in a way that means, that while He had the power to create us, He chose to create us and love us and instill in us a desire to have a deep true relationship with Him.  I know many of you have heard this before, but I ask your forbearance and bridle your experience and spiritual maturity to look at this with a fresh view. HE IS OURS!  He belongs to us.  He belongs to me.  What kind of love is that? The kind that I nor you, nor anyone else will understand in this earthly realm. But oh how wonderful.  I am yours and you are mine.  Dear God you are mine.  I surrender an unworthy, blemished, dishonored, corrupted heart, mind, and soul to the being who is absolutely pure and the source of all holiness. He did not need it but He desired it. He desired you.  He desired me.  Not as master/slave, although that aspect of the relationship does exist, but as father.  Father by its very definition implies a relationship of ownership on the part of the child.  Hey look!  That's MY dad.  My abba. My heavenly father.  Not in the formal sense (there is a place for that as well) but in the intimate familial sense.  Yes He is mine!  He is MY God as he stated in Jeremiah. He chose to become mine! He chose to become yours too.
